Tunnel Mountain Trail

Length: 2.8 miles (4.5 km)

Elevation Gain: 872 ft (265 m)

Date Hiked: January 5, 2020

Tunnel Mountain lies in the heart of the town of Banff. We tackled this little mountain—little compared to its surroundings—right when we moved here in January 2020. It was a nice, fairly easy hike to ease ourselves into the elevation and one that both of our dogs had no issues climbing.

This is a very easy, very popular hike, so you should have no issues plugging it into your GPS. Coming from Calgary, you take Highway 1 into Banff and look for the exit sign that says Tunnel Mountain. You'll go through the town (make sure you scope out a good lunch spot for after) and make your way to the trailhead. It's not a very big parking lot, so I recommend getting there early.

Given the low elevation gain, it only took us about an hour and a half to complete—that included a few minutes at the top and taking photos along the way. I highly recommend this hike for anyone looking for an easy, scenic hike close to town. It's great for kids and dogs and definitely one to check off your Banff bucket list when you're in town!
